Small Steps for Big Changes expands in Kelowna

Small Steps may be coming to a facility near you! Since 2017, Small Steps for Big Changes has been supporting people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes at the downtown Kelowna YMCA and Kelowna Family YMCA. The program is expanding this spring to Kelowna’s H2O Adventure & Fitness Centre and everywhere – through a new virtual delivery platform.

Small Steps participants have long requested an expansion to Kelowna’s third YMCA location, the H2O Adventure & Fitness Centre. For some, it’s a more convenient location closer to home or work.

Participants who opt to receive the program virtually can meet with their Small Steps coach one-on-one in the comfort and safety of their own home (via computer, phone or tablet), while completing exercise in their own time and preferred location.

One of our first virtual participants, Ruth, talks about her experience in the Winter 2022 issue of In Stride. About the program, Ruth says, “Small Steps for Big Changes is an effective way to address my goals. Also, it is research-based so I can be confident about following the guide. The program does not promise a quick fix and it fits into my lifestyle. I like the idea that I am contributing through a research study that will add to the body of knowledge supporting type 2 diabetes prevention.”

Participants in the Small Steps for Big Changes study meet one-on-one with a health coach six times over the course of four weeks. Each session includes a counselling session to discuss diet and exercise modifications. Those completing the program in-person also practice exercising in the fitness facility with the support of their coach. Post-program, participants check-in with their coach regularly to discuss their progress.
